Two professorships complete the expertise in regenerative medicine in the CRTD

With the appointment of Prof. Dr. med. Martin Bornhäuser for Translational Biomedical Research in July 2009 and of Prof. Dr. Carsten Werner in the area of Biofunctional Polymer Materials a few months ago, the CRTD gains top-class growth. Both professors complete the team of leading minds. Since 2007, three professors are already at the CRTD: Prof. Dr. Ezio Bonifacio with the professorship for Preclinical Approaches to Stem Cell Therapy, Prof. Dr. Gerd Kempermann has the professorship for Genomic Basis of Regeneration and Prof. Dr. Elly Tanaka with the professorship for Animal Models of Regeneration.

The new CRTD professor Carsten Werner was appointed in September 2008 as professor for Biofunctional Polymer Materials. It’s a joint professorship of CRTD and the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research (IPF). Related to the CRTD, the research focus of Carsten Werner and his coworkers is the development of polymer matrices to control cellular fate decisions to stimulate the regeneration of various tissues. Beyond that, his research deals with electrosurface phenomena on polymer materials and with the design of blood compatible interfaces. Prof. Dr. med. Martin Bornhäuser is professor for Translational Biomedical Research since July 1, 2009. Martin Bornhäuser is the head of the stem cell transplantation in the Medical clinic and policlinic I at the Universitätsklinikums Carl Gustav Carus. An important focus of Martin Bornhäusers work is the optimization of the therapy of a rejection reaction (Graft-versus-Host Reaktion) and the immune therapy with lymphocytes of donors. The main focus of his research stays the development of new therapeutic agents for the clinical use.
